What Is Spray Foam
In simple terms, spray foam is an insulation and air barrier that seals your structure in as little as one inch. Spray foam insulation is applied in two liquid parts. Part A and Part B. Once applied to your walls it expands creating Polyurethane Foam. Spray foam is incredible in many ways. It adheres to virtually anything you spray it on whether it be metal, wood, concrete, and more.
R-Value
R-value is the measure of the resistance a barrier has to conductive heat. The smaller the R-value, the less insulative it is. When looking at the R-values spray foam insulation ranges from R-3.5 to R-7 per inch. When comparing spray foam on the R-value formula to conventional insulation, sealing properties are not taken into account. Spray foam creates an airtight barrier sealing your home from allergens, moisture, and heat loss. Where conventional insulations blow around and settle in your attic and walls, spray foam will maintain form and prevent any air movement. There are two types of foam, Closed Cell and Open Cell. You can look at the similarities and differences below.
Closed Cell Foam
A value of R-7 per inch.
Soundproofing.
Creates airtight and vapor-tight barriers.
Resists water and is great for waterproofing.
Maintains form and doesn't settle like blown-in insulation.
Strengthens building by bonding to everything it's sprayed on.
Open Cell Foam
A value of R-3.8 per inch.
Soundproofing.
Creates an airtight barrier.
Absorbs water.
Maintains form and doesn't settle like blown-in insulation.
